By now you've probably heard that Volvo just released their first all-electric SUV, the 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge (and it's available at Leikin Volvo Cars Cleveland). And we're also going to assume that you've heard of the Tesla Model Y, their version of an all-electric SUV, currently on the market.
But how do these mid-sized electric SUVs compare?

Both the Tesla and the Volvo provide their driver with a smooth ride. Both are outfitted with twin electric motors and with similar acceleration and horsepower. The Volvo XC40 Recharge comes standard with all-wheel drive, while if you choose the Tesla, you'll have to opt into a higher trim level for that feature. Similarly, both models have comparable range at the base trim when fully charged, and to gain access to longer range with the Tesla, that comes at extra cost.
As you know, Volvo has a long history of unparalleled commitment to safety, and it has become a staple of the brand. And that is no different when it comes to the XC40 Recharge. This vehicle comes standard with a wide range of driver-assist features to keep you and your family safe.
While both the Volvo and the Tesla come with 360-degree view cameras and features like automated emergency braking and lane-departure assist, the Volvo XC40 Recharge has a longer list of standard safety features, and many in the Tesla are at additional cost. Much of the Tesla Model Y's full self-driving capability features are also at extra cost.
The Volvo XC40 Recharge maintains much of the design you know and love from the Volvo XC40. This XC40 Recharge is designed with a sustainable interior, and the interior carpets are made from recycled plastic. The Volvo and the Tesla both come with excellent storage space and take advantage of the lack of an engine for extra room. The Volvo XC40 Recharge also comes with all the cubby storage you find in the non-electric model, like under-seat bins and large door pockets.
When it comes to exterior design, the Volvo is available in a few more colors than the Tesla, including a lighter shade of silver and a sage green metallic. It has all the curb-appeal of the original XC40.
Both the Volvo and the Tesla offer excellent technology features with touchscreens in the cabin. The Volvo system is a bit more user friendly, as many of the essential functions of the cabin, like climate control and speedometer, are still built into the dashboard. Whereas with the Tesla, almost every function is in the touchscreen, which can be counter-intuitive at first. Both vehicles offer Bluetooth connectivity, wireless charging, and high-quality audio systems.
