What's the Scoop? Volvo super-turbo-charges new 4-Cylinder engines

Everyone has heard of a turbo-charged or super-charged engine. But have you ever heard of an engine that uses both technologies?

Using the supercharger to boost the low end torque gives the gasoline 302-horsepower T6 engine a big, naturally aspirated feel. The mechanically linked compressor starts to function immediately at low revs, while the turbocharger kicks in when the airflow builds up.

Volvo has recently invested billions of dollars into the company and it is paying off with peppy but economical 4-cylinder engines. The new 2.0L 4-cylinder will produce either 240 hp (turbo-charged) or 302 hp (super & turbo-charged). The press release says that fuel economy will improve "13 to 26 percent depending on the engine to which they are compared." Part of the increase is due to a new 8-speed automatic transmission. And if that's not enough of a boost for you, they will be adding an "integrated starter generator" and batteries to make hybrids in the near future.
